Helping Brazil adapt to climate change

We support climate action projects, including solar panels, small-scale hydropower and other renewable sources in Brazil with BDMG, the Brazilian development bank. We are also working on sustainable energy projects with the energy utility company Neoenergia. In Brazil's northeast, we help build a wind park, solar facilities and onshore wind turbines.

We support the Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais (COPASA), the water utility company in the State of Minas Gerais. This will improve the water supply, sanitation coverage and treatment of drinkable water and wastewater.

Gender equality in times of COVID-19

We work with Banco do Nordeste do Brasil to support micro-enterprises in Brazil. This targeted support benefits the most vulnerable and very low-income borrowers in the region, and female-led businesses in particular.

In partnership with Banco Regional de Desenvolvimento do Extremo Sul (BRDE), the EIB supports small and medium-sized enterprises in Brazil impacted by COVID-19.

Safer neighbourhoods in Brazil

Sustainable urban development is a key part of the EU’s Green Deal. With more heatwaves due to climate change, access to water, green spaces and reduced traffic are now more essential than ever for urban living.

The European Investment Bank and Fonplata, with funds from the EU’s Latin America Investment Facility, are supporting water infrastructure, new cycle lanes, and well-lit public parks and leisure areas to make life in São Gonçalo do Amarante more enjoyable for people living there.

As part of Team Europe, the EIB has increased its development finance, especially in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. EIB activity in the region in 2022

2022 was a record year for the EIB in Latin America and the Caribbean. The EU bank, more than doubled its support to the region, providing €1.69 billion of financing for projects in 2022, compared to €742 million in 2021. These funds contribute to sustainable and inclusive development in the region, and to promoting climate action, in line with the Global Gateway objectives.
