An EIB donor since 2005, the Netherlands has pledged a total of €84 million to four EIB trust funds. The Netherlands provides development assistance to the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood and sub-Saharan Africa via contributions to the FEMIP Trust Fund (FTF) and the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund (EU-AITF). More recently, the Netherlands and the EIB have collaborated to set up a Water Sector Fund (WSF) to support the development and implementation of sound water projects. In 2023, the Netherlands made a contribution to the EU for Ukraine Fund (EU4U), which supports the country's reconstruction and recovery.
Donor partnerships provide an effective vehicle for donors looking to deliver sustained impact in developing countries. They enable donors to work with the EIB to unlock projects with high socio-economic returns, reaching out to people and places with additional support for targeted development outcomes. EIB activities outside the EU account for around one third of EU development aid. All contributions to EIB donor funds are considered Official Development Assistance (ODA) eligible.
