  • Summary
  • Belgium and the European Union have lost a great statesman – and the EIB has lost a great President. Philippe Maystadt was a convinced European, a builder of the European project. He was among those who could genuinely claim to be an architect of the euro, but out of modesty never did so.

  • “Belgium and the European Union have lost a great statesman – and the EIB has lost a great President. Philippe Maystadt was a convinced European, a builder of the European project. He was among those who could genuinely claim to be an architect of the euro, but out of modesty never did so.

He put his long experience serving the Belgian Government and Europe, his extensive skills, outstanding intelligence, talent as a negotiator, rigour, and exceptional capacity for hard work at the service of the European Investment Bank when he became its President in 2000.

Over 12 years he transformed the Bank into a committed institution effectively supporting EU policy; a powerful tool for the European economy.

He has left us, but he will not be forgotten. On behalf of the EIB Group, I offer my sincere condolences to his family and many friends.”
