  • The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Brabant Water, the water utility for the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant, have signed a lending agreement for EUR 150m. The financing will support Brabant Water’s 2016-2021 investment programme.

Brabant Water’s investment programme consists in upgrading and renewing ground water treatment facilities (production and softening plants), as well as rehabilitating and renewing distribution pipes, water meters and ICT items. Under the programme, Brabant Water will also improve the environmental footprint of its production facilities by installing solar panels and wind turbines.

EIB Vice-President Pim van Ballekom said: “Not many people are aware of how much work and investment are needed to provide millions of consumers with high quality drinking water every day. The EIB is very present in the water sector in the Netherlands, with nearly EUR 800m invested in the last ten years. We are proud to support Brabant Water so that it will sustain the high quality of both the water and the services that it provides every day.”

Ultimately, the investments are aimed at maintaining the high quality of the drinking water in the area as well as guaranteeing the security of drinking water supply for some 2.5 million residents of the Province of Noord-Brabant. Apart from the modernisation and rehabilitation works, some infrastructure extensions to the water distribution system are also planned, which will have a positive effect on employment locally.
