  • Following early parliamentary elections in Greece, a new government has been formed and Mr Yanis Varoufakis was appointed Minister of Finance. He also becomes EIB Governor, succeeding Mr Gikas Hardouvelis.

    Before his appointment to the Government, Mr Varoufakis was, since January 2013, a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas, Austin, USA. Since 2006, he was also a Professor of Economic Theory at the University of Athens and since September 1996, he was a Hoover Fellow in Economic and Social Ethics at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium.

    Between 1990 and 2002, he was a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Sydney. Between 1995 and 1996, he was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Economy at the University of Glasgow.

    From 1988 to 1990, he was a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Sydney.

    Previously, Mr Varoufakis held, since 1983, different academic positions at the Universities of Cambridge, East Anglia and Essex in the United Kingdom.

    Mr Varoufakis holds a MSc in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Birmingham (1982) and a PhD in Economics from the University of Essex (1987).
