  • Following a cabinet reshuffle, Mr Gikas Hardouvelis was sworn in as Minister of Finance of the Hellenic Republic on 10 June 2014, succeeding Mr Yannis Stournaras.

    Prior to his appointment, Mr Hardouvelis was Chief Economist and Director of Research at EUROBANK Group.

    Previously, he served as Chief Economic Adviser and Director in the Economic Office of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos from November 2011 to May 2012 and held the same position in the Economic Office of Prime Miniter Costas Simitis from April 2000 to March 2004.

    From January 1996 to April 2000, he was Chief Economist and Director of Strategic Planning and Research at the National Bank of Greece and also served as second Alternate to the Governor at the European Monetary Institute from March 1995 to December 1995.

    From September 1987 to June 1993, Mr Hardouvelis worked as Research Adviser and Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

    From July 1993 to June 1996, he was an Associate Professor at the School of Business, Rutgers University in the USA and an Assistant Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University.

    Mr Hardouvelis holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Science in Business Administration, Applied Mathematics, from Harvard University.
